The monarchy of Denmark is over 1000 years old and can be traced back to King Gorm in the 10th century. Originally, the monarchy was elective, but the eldest son of the King was almost always elected. In 1660 the elective monarchy was replaced by an inherited monarchy. In 1894 the monarchy changed from absolute to constitutional, and the Act of Succession of 1953 allowed for the possibility of a female monarch.
