The Kuli Runestone, originally found in northwestern Norway, contains the first ever mention of Norway as a country. It also dates the establishment of Christianity in the country. This important phrase is usually translated as “…twelve winters Christianity has been in Norway”.

Due to the younger alphabet used on it, the stone is dated to 800-1400 CE. It contains 80 visible runes, but it is believed the inscription was originally longer, because the top of the stone has broken off.

The Kuli Stone was recently added to Norway’s new list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
